fix(query-db-collection): keep served ordered prefixes whole on refetch - #2154
KyleAMathews wants to merge 10 commits into
Conversation
An explicit on-demand refetch reads each predicate and order's deepest served prefix once, with the loader's own request shapes, and every page in that family takes the combined rows. Refetching each ordered page alone could leave a row between two served pages in no result (#2136). Adds a generated-history oracle for the law, states the rule in the LoadSubset docs, and records two pre-existing loader defects it found. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

- Size the first prefix request from the page's serve, so repeated refetches do not grow. - Install a page's prefix override only for its own refetch call. - Fail when a continuation page does not advance. - Give each prefix request a Query key derived from its request data. - Read a background refetch of a served page through its prefix too. - Treat NaN as incomparable and read the rest of the order instead. - Mark buildCursorExpressions internal. Extends the oracle with a stationarity law, a key law, a fail-fast case, invalidation checkpoints, and an invalidation replay. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

Address the high review of #2154: - A short reply no longer ends a prefix read; only an empty page or a row past the boundary does (a short reply does not prove source exhaustion). - Pages that refetch in one synchronous burst, explicit or through Query invalidation, share one read per predicate and order. This removes the explicit refetch plan, its abort controller, and quadratic background reads. - Order with the loader's comparator (makeComparator, now an internal export) instead of a local one. - Record a page's boundary from its first applied result, not from a resolved fetch that Query may discard. - Keep only the served prefix in the combined rows, in order. - Leave each page's Query signal alone; cleanup aborts shared reads. Extends the oracle with a locale-collated string order, a page-capping provider replay, a first-page request law, and an invalidation cost law, and records a pre-existing capped-provider repair defect. …stead of re-reading prefixes Replace query-db's adapter-side served-prefix read with a loader-side signal. A sync adapter that refetches loaded subsets on its own now either keeps served prefixes whole or calls invalidateLoadedSubsets() once the refetched rows apply. Core coalesces the report into one loadedSubsets:invalidated event per turn, and each ordered loader, in live queries and Effects, runs its existing bounded prefix repair. Loaders whose coverage is one full-source acquisition ignore it. query-db reports only when a non-last page of a multi-page ordered window changes its keys, including a page followed by an empty one. Results of the loader's own refetch:true acquisitions never report. The SQLite persistence wrapper forwards the call under its session guard. An ordering invalidation that overlaps in-flight page or tie work, after the source has settled once, now repairs with a bounded prefix instead of a full-source read. Full-source reads can be very expensive. Failure recovery is unchanged and is tracked separately. The query-db oracle gains a never-new-full-source law, a second live query in its grammar, fault injection, and replays for an empty later page, a moved last row, and a provider that honors neither cursor nor offset. Loader-state and pagination oracles now expect bounded repair on overlap. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

A page with no later page can still open a gap: when rows that arrive ahead push its old last row out and a tie request still holds that row, the loader sees no delete and treats rows through the old boundary as loaded. Report when a page's keys change and its end moves earlier in the order. Found by the ordered-work oracle's refetch-then-signal provider. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

🎯 Changes
An on-demand Query Collection can show a wrong ordered window after a refetch. A row that moves between two served pages never loads. With this PR, Query DB reports that its pages may have shifted, and the ordered loader re-establishes the window with its existing bounded repair.
The failure
The ordered loader pages a window. It requests a first page (
orderBy,limit), tie requests at a boundary value, and continuation pages (cursorandoffset). Each request gets its own Query observer, and a refetch re-runs each one alone. The trace from #2136 (order
rank desc, limit 2, a LEFT-joined marker filter):[10, 4].[4, 1].collection.utils.refetch()runs. The first page now returns 10 and 6. The continuation still starts after rank 4 and returns 1.Rank 5 is in no result. The loader re-requests only when a row it sent is deleted or changes order, so it never asks for rank 5. The window stays
[4, 1]; the expected window is[5, 4].The rule
After a page's request settles, the loader's boundary is the leading order value of the page's last row. The loader treats every row through that boundary as loaded. A sync adapter that refetches loaded subsets on its own must therefore do one of two things:
invalidateLoadedSubsets()once the refetched rows apply.The
LoadSubsetOptionsandLoadSubsetFndocs, the sync-adapter guide, and ARCHITECTURE.md state this rule. The repair
invalidateLoadedSubsets(). Core coalesces calls into oneloadedSubsets:invalidatedCollection event per turn.refetch: trueprefix from the start throughoffset + limit, then a tie and any refill, behind the publication barrier. A loader whose coverage is one full-source acquisition ignores the signal, because the refetch has already re-read it.refetch: trueacquisitions never signal. Query DB batches one report per burst of refetched pages. What still reads the full source
requiresFullSourceplans; An attempt to make failed requests recover with a bounded repair caused real regressions, including a wrong window after a failed tie request. It is split out as follow-up work and recorded in the coverage map.
Loader defects found, not fixed here
The query-db oracle found three ordered-loader defects that also occur on
main. Each has anit.failswitness and an open coverage-map entry:offsetgets a wrong window at preload under a joined filter. The loader repeats a continuation offset that is capped at the window size.Verification
packages/query-db-collection/tests/refetch-ordered-prefix-oracle.test.tsis a generated-history oracle:query-db.refetch-ordered-prefix. The grammar includes a second live query whose own demand can load a page's new row first. Its laws:
Named replays cover:
These wrong designs each fail the oracle by assertion: never signalling, keeping the old overlap-to-full-source rule, and ignoring empty later pages. Removing the loop guard survives, because a repair's own result can change a page's keys only once per backend change.
The loader-state and pagination oracles now expect a bounded repair, not a full-source read, when an invalidation overlaps in-flight tie work.
