Fixes https://issues.redhat.com/browse/OCPBUGS-120842
Fixes #572

Summary

The default Argo CD instance is owned by GitOps Service. Node selection for that instance is applied on the openshift-gitops namespace (openshift.io/node-selector), not by setting spec.nodePlacement.NodeSelector on the ArgoCD CR.

Approach

  • GitopsService.spec.runOnInfra continues to set openshift.io/node-selector=node-role.kubernetes.io/infra=
  • GitopsService.spec.nodeSelector is merged into the same namespace annotation
  • GitopsService.spec.tolerations still sync onto the default ArgoCD CR (pods need taints; the namespace annotation cannot express them)
  • GitOps Service-owned workloads (backend cluster Deployment) still get nodeSelector on the pod template
  • The default ArgoCD CR is not treated as an admin-owned placement object

How Has This Been Tested?

go test ./common/ ./controllers/

Manual: set spec.runOnInfra: true and/or spec.nodeSelector on GitopsService cluster, then confirm the openshift-gitops namespace annotation and that Argo CD workload templates are not given a GitopsService nodeSelector.

Hi @Pratik-Redhat-Tech. Thanks for your PR.

I'm waiting for a redhat-developer member to verify that this patch is reasonable to test. If it is, they should reply with /ok-to-test on its own line. Until that is done, I will not automatically test new commits in this PR, but the usual testing commands by org members will still work.

Regular contributors should join the org to skip this step.

Once the patch is verified, the new status will be reflected by the ok-to-test label.

I understand the commands that are listed here.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Custom node selectors are now recorded on the openshift-gitops namespace instead of being applied to Argo CD workloads.
    • The GitOps Service backend retains its configured node selectors, while Argo CD workloads retain their Linux selector.
    • Infra placement combines the infra and custom selectors in the namespace annotation, while tolerations continue to be applied to Argo CD workloads.
    • Clearing placement settings removes the corresponding namespace annotation and managed Argo CD placement.

GitOpsService node selectors are now serialized into namespace annotations, including the infra selector when configured. The default Argo CD instance no longer receives those selectors through NodePlacement; toleration reconciliation remains. Unit, controller, and end-to-end tests cover the resulting annotation and placement behavior.

Changes: Namespace selector placement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and reconcile namespace selector annotations
common/common.go, controllers/gitopsservice_controller.go
Adds a helper that serializes custom and infra selectors into a sorted annotation value. Namespace reconciliation sets, updates, or removes the annotation based on the desired value.
Separate selector and toleration placement
controllers/gitopsservice_controller.go
Removes copying GitOpsService selectors into the default Argo CD NodePlacement. Toleration synchronization remains.
Validate selector and toleration reconciliation
common/common_test.go, controllers/gitopsservice_controller_test.go, test/openshift/e2e/ginkgo/sequential/1-071_validate_node_selectors_test.go
Tests check selector annotations, Argo CD placement and tolerations, and scheduling selectors on backend and Argo CD workloads.

…goCD CR

When GitopsService does not configure nodeSelector or tolerations, the
reconcile loop was clearing spec.nodePlacement on the default ArgoCD CR.
Admins who set nodePlacement directly on the ArgoCD CR (documented pattern
for dedicated infra nodes) saw scheduling config removed every reconcile.

Only sync NodePlacement when GitopsService explicitly configures placement
fields. Track GitopsService-managed placement with an annotation so clearing
GitopsService fields still removes operator-applied placement.

The default instance is owned and managed by the GitOps Service. We have changed the mechanism for supporting running in infra nodes, operator currently annotates the namespace opneshift-gitops namespace rather than setting node selector for the argocd instance and the workloads created by that instance.

@Pratik-Redhat-Tech is this a customer bug ?

@anandf This is not a customer-case bug.

It comes from the GitHub report in #572 (NodePlacement / nodeSelector / tolerations not applying to Argo CD workloads) and is tracked as OCPBUGS-120842.

@anandf Thank you for the clarification.

Agreed — the default Argo CD instance is owned by GitOps Service. Infra-node placement is handled by annotating the openshift-gitops namespace (openshift.io/node-selector via spec.runOnInfra), not by setting spec.nodePlacement on the default ArgoCD CR.

This PR was preserving admin nodePlacement on that default instance, which fights that model. Closing it.

For dedicated infra nodes, the supported path is GitopsService.spec.runOnInfra: true (and tolerations on GitopsService as needed), as covered by the existing e2e in 1-028-validate_run_on_infra_test.go.

@anandf Thank you — I closed this earlier too quickly. Reopened with the approach you described.

The default Argo CD instance stays owned by GitOps Service. Node selection now goes on the openshift-gitops namespace (openshift.io/node-selector) from spec.runOnInfra and spec.nodeSelector, instead of spec.nodePlacement.NodeSelector on the ArgoCD CR. Tolerations still sync from GitopsService onto the default instance, since taints cannot be expressed on the namespace annotation.

Happy to adjust further if anything still looks off.

GitOps Service owns the default Argo CD instance. Node selection for
that instance uses the openshift-gitops openshift.io/node-selector

spec.nodePlacement.NodeSelector on the ArgoCD CR. Tolerations still

All commits on this branch now include Signed-off-by. DCO should be clean; the namespace-annotation approach for default-instance node selectors is unchanged.

Namespace openshift.io/node-selector only affects newly admitted pods.
When GitopsService runOnInfra or nodeSelector changes that annotation,
restart existing Deployments and StatefulSets so running pods move.

@anandf The requested model is in place: default-instance node selection uses the openshift-gitops openshift.io/node-selector annotation from runOnInfra / GitopsService.spec.nodeSelector, not ArgoCD.spec.nodePlacement.NodeSelector. Tolerations still sync onto the default instance.

Follow-up: when that annotation changes, existing Argo CD Deployments/StatefulSets are rolled so running pods actually move. Would you mind taking another look when you have a moment?
