What does this PR do?

Fixes following issues observed with the recently-configured Dependabot setup:

  1. go mod tidy CI failures on Dependabot PRs (e.g. PR chore(deps): bump github.com/onsi/ginkgo/v2 from 2.32.0 to 2.33.1 in /argocd-operator #1389) — root go.mod uses a local replace for argocd-operator, so root and argocd-operator/go.mod share a single build graph. PRs that bumped a shared dependency in
only one of the two go.mod files left the other stale, causing go mod tidy to rewrite go.sum and fail the git status -s clean check in scripts/openshiftci-presubmit-unittests.sh.
  2. directories didn't combine root + argocd-operator changes into one PR — listing multiple paths under directories only lets Dependabot manage them as one entry; by default it still opens one PR per directory per
dependency. Combining requires an explicit groups rule with group-by: dependency-name.

Changes

  • Added open-pull-requests-limit: 5 explicitly to all four gomod update entries for clarity/auditability.
  • Added a groups.gomod-combined.group-by: dependency-name rule to the master entry so a dependency bumped in both / and /argocd-operator lands in a single PR, keeping the two go.mod/go.sum files in sync and avoiding
the go mod tidy CI failure.

PR acceptance criteria: N/A config change

What type of PR is this?
kind bug

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Automated Go dependency updates are limited to five open pull requests on each of the v1.20, v1.21, v1.22, and master branches, keeping the number of open update requests manageable.
    • On master, updates for the main project and operator are grouped by dependency, so updates to the same dependency are handled together.

Dependabot now limits open pull requests to five for Go module updates on v1.20, v1.21, v1.22, and master. The master configuration groups updates across the root and /argocd-operator by dependency name.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cf51a

Dependabot now groups updates across both Go modules, but CI checks tidy state only in the root module. Add a nested-module check to reduce the chance of stale dependency files being merged.

Check both Go modules in CI.

group-by: dependency-name is a valid Dependabot option for multi-directory configurations, and patterns is not required. However, the check-go-modules job runs go mod tidy only from the repository root. A change to /argocd-operator can therefore leave its go.sum stale without detection.
